He is a thriving, brilliant, brat of a dog and we love him. :>

The first time Dougal’s arthritis flared up over four years ago, I thought my dog was dying. I thought his spine was imploding. When he moved, he screamed in pain and snapped at the air (and me). When he walked, his back was arched while he kept his pelvis tucked under his body, his back legs straight and rigid and somewhat dragging.

With every scream and howl and whine and warning air snap, I thought I was seeing my dog at his end before we went to the vet. The fact that we lived in a BedStuy 3rd floor walk up of old, steep wooden stairs that I had to carry Mr. 66lbs of Frothing Pain down so he could try to go to the bathroom without Dougal crumpling into fits of screaming, painful horror..

It was hell. And it only lasted a couple of hours.

If I hadn’t worked with dogs for ten years by that point, I would have probably been a wreck. But instead I called out of work, sequestered Dougal to a room separate from his brothers, broke out the laptop and sat down and wracked my brain as I got my vet’s number ready.

I had worked with aggression, senility (and aggressiveness due to senility), auto-immune, paralysis, parvo, lymes, canine influenza (all three of my eldest are immune due to catching it during an epidemic in Brooklyn about 5 or 6 years ago), the list goes on. Baby teething to holding a screaming, seizing, projectile shitting dog wrapped in a towel in a bathtub during it’s multiple grand mal seizures (it was in a kennel, there was NO safe way to just allow the seizures without interruption, short of the dog getting attacked) - I had dealt with a lot.

By the next day with minimal movement, a lot of love, and higher doses of glucosamine and chondroitin, his pain was far less. By 48 hours, it was so minimal it was difficult to restrain him from gallivanting around the house. And within a week, he was back to acting like a 4 year old (instead of a 9 year old). Does it get worse over the years? Of course. His limbs always shake now, and he’s cranky about how he’s touched at times (less prone to let Midas lay on him). But he’s going on 14, it’s to be expected.

I bring this up because yesterday, Chen suddenly started behaving the same way while I was at work during a really humid, gross storm. Ian was home alone, and pretty concerned (but did the right steps - putting his little old under 10 lbs self out of the way of animal or human foot traffic in a large crate with a bed, water, food, and all the comforts possible). We did what we always do - symptom check, write down possible outcomes, do what our vet would always tell us to do (monitor him and make notes), and wait 24 - 48 hours unless something extremely concerning came up. I massaged his spine, found the muscles in his back legs rigid, and got a lot of whale eye and even a few “please fucking stop” lip licks of warning when I touched his hips.

Chen’s 12. I was honestly expecting this sooner. Amusing coincidence - the boys were already starting their new Nupro when the shipment gets here (Bowie as well, due to his old leg break and just because I want him at perfect weight and healthy as possible :P). Due to his size, Chen’s only other option is the liquid form of g&c, and I refuse to put him on that/pay that price for something that doesn’t do nearly as much as Nupro.

Blah blah blah joys of owning senior dogs.

Did I mention Dougal’s full-body allergy reaction to a homeopathic shampoo (which he’s had all the oil types on him separately before) that took a thunder shirt, a head cone, and hydrotherapy at home for over a week and a half now to fix? Did I?

Oh, and Hooks (one of our Easter Egger chickens) has crossbeak. We’ve been carefully dremeling it into shape week by week & feeding him/her mash. So far, so good on nutrition.
